The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has cleared a ₹3,590.73 crore project to four-lane the 82.58 km Muzaffarpur-Sitamarhi-Sonbarsa section of NH-22 in Bihar.
To be executed under the Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM), this crucial infrastructure upgrade bridges the India-Nepal border at Sonbarsa with the East-West Corridor (NH-27). Engineered for a 100 km/h design speed with zero at-grade median openings, the corridor aims to drastically cut travel times, reduce congestion in densely populated towns, and lower freight costs.
Beyond economic connectivity, the project heavily boosts regional tourism by improving access to sacred sites such as the Baba Garibnath Temple, Mata Janki Temple, and Punaura Dham. The engineering scope features substantial structural additions, including seven major bridges—highlighted by a 340-metre crossing over the Bagmati River—along with multiple flyovers and railway overbridges.
